Death: tarot card meaning
Death describes an ending that has already happened or is happening right in front of you: a chapter closes and will not return in its old form. What matters most is what you let into the space it leaves.

Death upright
Something ends here for good, with no halfway version and no return to the previous arrangement: a job, a relationship, a role, a way of thinking about yourself. The card does not announce a literal death; it describes a cut, after which an empty and surprisingly calm space remains. Contrary to first impressions, it rarely asks permission: the change is usually already under way, and the choice is whether to go through it consciously or be dragged along. What comes next depends on what you do not try to take with you.
Death reversed
Reversed, Death is an ending that will not close: contact broken off yet kept alive, things never returned, a decision announced and then withdrawn. Fear of the emptiness can be bigger than the change itself, so the chapter is kept artificially alive. It can also signal a turning point that is only beginning, of which nothing is visible yet except resistance and a reluctance to call things by their name.
Symbolism
A skeleton in black armor rides a white horse, carrying a banner with a white five-petaled rose. A king lies before him, a bishop stands face to face with him, a woman turns her head away, a child offers flowers. One ending and four different responses. In the background, between two towers, the sun rises: this is a boundary, not the end. The thirteenth number closes the first half of the Major Arcana, right after the voluntary suspension of The Hanged Man.
How to read this card in a spread
As a description of the "situation" the card names a chapter that has truly ended, even if it formally continues. In the "action" position it says plainly: finish it instead of resuscitating it. In the "outcome" position it means a clean cut and a period of emptiness that is part of the process, not a punishment. Next to the Ten of Swords it confirms the matter has run its course and there is nothing left to lose; next to the Four of Pentacles it shows how tightly someone is holding on to what is leaving anyway.
Love and relationships
It can be the end of a relationship, but just as often the end of one version of it: the arrangement of roles, the unspoken agreement, the way you talk to each other. If you are single, it speaks of closing a story you kept returning to in memory. More important than the breakup itself is whether it was finished or merely interrupted.
Work and money
A layoff, a resignation, closing a business, or the end of a project that stopped making sense long ago. Rescuing what is falling apart will not help here; what makes sense is an orderly exit, handing things over, and getting your time back. With money it often means eliminating a cost that has dragged on from the previous chapter.
Advice
Close what has already ended, directly and completely: the conversation, the notice, the returned belongings. Do not fill the empty space right away with the first substitute.
