Six of Cups upright
Someone or something returns from an old story: a former friend, the town you grew up in, a matter set aside years ago. The card also describes kindness with nothing behind it: help where no one keeps score of who owes whom. The Six is warm, but it faces backward: what is good here carries a date earlier than today.
Six of Cups reversed
Reversed, the Six of Cups shows a past that has stopped being a shelter and become an anchor: idealizing the old days, keeping in touch out of pure sentiment, making adult decisions in roles carried over from childhood. Sometimes it signals that you are only now managing to step out of that.
Symbolism
In a courtyard, an older boy hands a smaller figure a cup with a white five-petaled flower growing in it; similar cups with flowers stand nearby. The setting is domestic and safe: walls, stone, a garden. In the distance a guard walks away, as if for a moment no one is watching over anything. This is an image of care, not of romance.
How to read this card in a spread
In the "situation" position, the Six describes a matter whose roots reach much further back than the current events, one that cannot be settled by today's facts alone. In the "action" position it suggests reaching out to someone who once mattered.
