Five of Cups: tarot card meaning
The Five of Cups is about what is already gone, and about attention that refuses to look away from it. What often matters most in the spread is whether the loss is fresh or has been carried for years.

Five of Cups upright
Here the loss is a fact, not a risk: a breakup, a refusal, a death, a project that swallowed years. The card does not ask you to be glad about any of it. It gives grief the right to exist. But it also shows the figure standing with their back to two full cups, still uncounted. Across the river there is a bridge and a house; the way back exists, no one is simply looking at it right now.
Five of Cups reversed
Reversed, the Five of Cups most often means turning away from what was spilled: the person picks up those two cups and walks toward the bridge. Less often it warns against a hasty "I am over it," after which the grief returns later, or against a story of injury kept alive because it has become an identity.
Symbolism
A figure in a black cloak stands bent over three toppled cups; what they held is soaking into the ground. The two remaining cups stand untouched behind them, but the cloak blocks the view. A river runs in front, and beyond it a bridge and a castle: a place to return to. Nothing is holding the figure in this spot.
How to read this card in a spread
As an obstacle, the Five points out that every next decision is being made purely from the perspective of what was lost. In the "situation" position it describes grief already under way, not a threat still coming. The worst has already happened, and nothing more is coming. Next to the Six of Cups it shows a past remembered as better than it was; next to The Tower it adds that the loss was sudden and there is no one to blame for it.
Love and relationships
After a breakup: the stage where every new person gets measured against that one. In a relationship it is resentment over something that happened and cannot be undone, resurfacing in every argument. The card asks who is still standing beside you while you look the other way.
Work and money
A failed project, a lost client, a rejection that still fills your head weeks later. The Five also appears around financial losses: an investment that did not pay off, money lent to someone and never returned. Write down what is actually left before you plan anything further.
