A noisy clash of opinions with more gesturing in it than real fighting. That is the Five of Wands. The reading changes depending on whether the rivalry is external or playing out inside one head.

Five of Wands upright
The calm of the Four ends: competition appears, interests collide, and five people are each convinced they are right. Nobody here wants to destroy anyone. What is missing is rules and an order of speaking. The card can be creative too: this kind of friction produces arguments nobody had before. It only becomes exhausting when it drags on without a resolution.
Five of Wands reversed
The reversed Five is conflict pushed under the table: digs instead of conversation, silence in the meeting, grievances passed along sideways. It can also be the end of a dispute and a return to work. A third variant: someone withdrew from the rivalry not because they lost, but because they could not be bothered any longer.
Symbolism
Five young people raise their wands, but no blow lands on anyone, because the staves pass each other in the air. Each wears a different outfit, which suggests different interests rather than two sides. Nobody is wounded, nobody is down. This looks like practice, a scuffle in the yard, not a fight for survival. The staves are green and still in leaf: the dispute is over something that is only just growing.
How to read this card in a spread
In the "situation" position the Five describes an environment you have to push through: a hiring round with many candidates, a discussion with no moderator, an inheritance split among siblings. In the "action" position it advises entering the dispute but imposing a form on it: an order, a deadline, a clear criterion. In the "outcome" position it foretells a resolution postponed. Next to the Six of Wands it ends in your victory; next to the Seven of Wands you are fighting alone against a group.
Love and relationships
Arguments over small things that are really an argument about who sets the rules. For singles: interest in someone who has other options, or competing for attention within a group of friends. The card says nothing about betrayal or a breakup, only about noise in which no specific need can be heard.
Work and money
A tender with five firms bidding, a team with no defined roles, a meeting that ends with no decision. The Five of Wands favors those who can bring order to a conversation, not those who shout loudest. With money, costs rise through friction: revisions, reruns, time wasted on agreements nobody wrote down.
