Eight of Cups upright
Nothing here has been destroyed: the cups stand in neat rows, everything built is intact, and still the figure takes a staff and heads for the mountains. The card describes a decision to leave made out of something missing, not out of harm: a relationship with nothing wrong in it, a well-paid job, an apartment where everything is fine. In the row of cups there is a gap: one is missing, and that one decides.
Eight of Cups reversed
Reversed, the Eight of Cups describes a departure stuck halfway: the bag packed for months, the resignation letter written and never handed in. It can also be a return, but a conscious one, after checking that there is nothing better further on. Sometimes it speaks of running from every situation before it has a chance to get hard.
Symbolism
A figure in a red cloak walks away toward the hills, leaning on a staff, back turned to the viewer. Behind them, eight cups arranged in two rows, with a clear gap in the top one: a whole with something missing. Over the water hangs an eclipsed moon, and the light is uncertain. The water and rocks make clear the road will not be comfortable.
How to read this card in a spread
In the "situation" position, the Eight describes a departure already begun on the inside, even if no one has been told yet. In the "action" position it says simply: let go of what is finished, instead of fixing the same thing one more time. Next to the Four of Cups it shows how ordinary boredom ripened into a decision; next to the Ten of Cups it warns that what is being abandoned is something you may spend years looking for again.
Love and relationships
Leaving a relationship where there is no fault and no fight. It simply stopped being enough. If you are single: the end of waiting for someone who will never make up their mind. The card rarely means a sudden breakup; more often a quiet withdrawal the other person notices late.
Work and money
Leaving a good job, closing a business that turns a profit, letting go of a client who pays on time. The Eight appears when the financial stakes outweigh the emotional reason, and the decision gets made anyway. Plan a cushion for the transition.
