Three of Swords upright
The fact has landed and cannot be undone: someone left, someone lied, something was said outright. The card does not dramatize; it puts things in order. The pain here is the consequence of information, and the information tends to be true, so no rephrasing will cancel it. The Three gives you the worst and the most useful thing at once: certainty about where you really stand and what you no longer have to guess.
Three of Swords reversed
Reversed, the Three of Swords is usually the stage after the blow: the wound is there, but it stops organizing every day. It can also be telling the same hurt so many times that the story takes on a life of its own, or refusing to admit that something hurt, out of wounded pride rather than strength.
Symbolism
Three swords pierce a red heart hanging against storm clouds and pouring rain. There is no figure here. Nobody complains, and the frame holds neither a witness nor a culprit. The image itself is cold and schematic, like a report: this many blows, driven in this way. The rain falls evenly and will stop on its own.
How to read this card in a spread
In the "situation" position it names a specific event, not a mood. It is worth asking plainly what was said and when. As the "action" it says: tell the truth, even if it wounds. As the "outcome" it means a breakup or an explanation after which the arrangement does not hold together again. Next to the Six of Swords it shows that this blow is followed by leaving or cutting ties; next to the Ten of Swords it indicates this was not a single incident, only the last in a series.
Love and relationships
Most often it is a confession that ends the illusions: about a third person, about feelings that are gone, about a decision made long ago. If you are single, the card more often points to an unfinished breakup from years back than to a fresh hurt. It does not promise reconciliation, but it ends the state in which you had to guess.
Work and money
A layoff, a rejected offer, a project handed to someone else, a harsh review delivered in front of witnesses. In money matters: a loss you can count to the last dollar, and the need to tell someone about it. The card advises sticking to the facts when you talk to your manager, because the emotional version of this story will weaken your position.

Name exactly what happened, in one sentence, with no interpretation and no softening. Do not try to repair the relationship before you establish what was actually said in it.
