Three of Pentacles: tarot card meaning

The Three of Pentacles describes the moment your skills get written into a larger undertaking run by someone else. A lot depends on whether your question is about the quality of the work or about the terms you are doing it on.

Three of Pentacles upright

A craftsperson works inside someone else's build: somebody ordered it, somebody paid for it, somebody will sign off on it. The card speaks of recognized competence: your work is being looked at and judged by people who know what they are looking at. It is a good position for learning, references and your rate, but not for ownership. Set the scope right away, because the one commissioning has more power here than the one doing the work.

Three of Pentacles reversed

Reversed, the collaboration grinds: overlapping responsibilities, a contractor with no say in the design, revisions without end. It can also be shoddy work, a job phoned in because nobody is checking. A common reading is work done and never credited: the result goes out under someone else's name, and the conversation about it never happens.

Symbolism

In a stone church a sculptor stands on a bench working at an arch; beside him a monk holding the plans and a figure in rich clothing point to a detail on the drawing. Three figures, three different roles: execution, design and funding. Above them three pentagrams are set into the Gothic vault. The building is real, but it is still unfinished.

How to read this card in a spread

In the "situation" position it announces a stage where your part becomes visible to the people who decide. In the "action" position it tells you to ask about requirements before you start, and to show progress as you go. In the "outcome" position it means a job well done and an invitation to the next one. Beside the Eight of Pentacles it speaks of a craft that finally pays; beside the Five of Wands it warns of a team working against itself.

Love and relationships

A relationship read as a joint project: a renovation, raising children, a move, a business run together. The card asks how the tasks are divided and whether each person's contribution is even named. If you are single, it can be a connection formed over shared work rather than across a table.

Work and money

A commission, a hiring process with a test assignment, a project where you are responsible for one piece. It favors negotiating your rate on the basis of a sample, not a claim. Where money is concerned, it describes income tied to a role: it grows as your skill grows, and it disappears when someone else's build is finished.

Advice

Put the scope and the acceptance criteria in writing before you start the work. Ask for a review halfway through so you are not fixing everything at the end.
