Strength: tarot card meaning

Strength describes mastery over what is wild, achieved through calm rather than dominance. The reading shifts depending on whether the matter concerns someone else's resistance or your own emotions.

Strength upright

Courage here comes from composure: from patience and calm contact with your own emotions, not from suppressing them. Strength shows that the hardest matters yield to repeated, gentle pressure and harden under force. That goes for someone else's anger, your own fear and a stubborn habit alike. In a spread it usually says you have more influence than you think, only it works slowly. It is also a card of endurance in matters that ask for presence over a long time, not a single powerful move.

Strength reversed

The calm turns out to be a front: anger gets swallowed and comes back as small digs or as an outburst about something else entirely. A second version is doubt: giving up just before the moment when patience would have started working. A third: trying to force a result out of someone or out of yourself, when it is already clear that pressure only raises the resistance on the other side.

Symbolism

A woman in a white gown, belted with a garland of flowers, calmly closes a lion's jaws with her bare hands. A lemniscate hovers above her head, the same one seen over The Magician. The power is there, just used differently. The lion is not defeated: it nuzzles her, its tail lowered. In the numbering, Strength comes right after The Chariot and is its correction: what cannot be delivered by willpower can be tamed.

How to read this card in a spread

In the "situation" position, Strength describes a test of patience: a difficult person, a process dragging on longer than it should, an emotion that keeps coming back. In the "action" position it is clear: lower your tone, repeat calmly, do not let go. As an "outcome" it points to a win through persistence, rarely quick but lasting. Beside the Nine of Wands it confirms it is worth holding on a little longer; beside The Devil it points to a habit that cannot be broken with a single resolution or a single conversation.

Love and relationships

A card of relationships that need calm: the talk after a fight, someone else's jealousy, the slow rebuilding of trust. If you are single, it advises not forcing the pace and not testing the other person. For a couple it shows that one calm conversation repeated a few times will change more than one ultimatum.

Work and money

A difficult client, a team in conflict, a negotiation where the other side raises its voice. Strength advises answering with substance and steering back to the topic instead of winning the exchange. With money it concerns discipline spread over months: steady repayment, setting aside a fixed amount, holding back from impulse purchases.

Advice

Return to the hard matter calmly and once again, in the same tone. Give up on settling it by force in one go, because here repetition wins, not intensity.
